Pokémon Emerald Version is a title in the main Pokémon series of video games. It was originally released for the Game Boy Advance in 2005. Pokémon Emerald Version is is an enhanced version of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Versions, and it takes place in the Hoenn region. The Legendary Pokémon Rayquaza is featured on the game cover and title screen, making it the game's mascot.
In typical Pokémon series fashion, the player is represented by a player character, who uses the same avatar as in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Versions, and can choose to have their character be either a male or a female. Their main goal is to win eight Gym Badges from each of the eight Gym Leaders in their respective Pokémon battle, challenge the Elite Four, and defeat the Pokémon League Champion to become the new one. Pokémon Emerald Version features the same three Starter Pokémon that were in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Versions: Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip. It also features the same Pokémon that were introduced in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Versions, but adds some Generation II Pokémon that were once limited to Pokémon Colosseum. The National Pokédex is also available without trading.
Both Team Magma and Team Aqua are the antagonists, which differs from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Versions in which one team was the antagonist and the other was the protagonist, trying to stop the other team. Instead of one team awakening a Legendary Pokémon, both teams succeed in each awakening a legendary Pokémon: Groudon and Kyogre. The two Pokémon do not obey either team and begin fighting, causing the weather to alternate between sunshine and rain. The player character must awaken Rayquaza, after which it swoops down and forces Groudon and Kyogre to stop fighting, returning Hoenn to normal.
Once the player character wins against the Elite Four, Norman arrives at the player character's house to give them the S.S. Ticket for the S.S. Tidal. A news bulletin appears and says that a colored Pokémon, either Latios or Latias, is in flight through Hoenn. A little later, the player character receives a phone call, whereupon they may enter the Battle Frontier through the S.S Tidal.
