The Pokémon Trainer is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He is the representative for Pokémon Trainers overall, but is specifically designed after Red, particularly from in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Versions. The Pokémon Trainer does not directly engage in combat but rather uses three Pokémon who fight on his behalf: Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard. All three of his Pokémon are the Generation I Starter Pokémon, each at a different evolution stage. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a female Pokémon Trainer designed after Leaf was added as an alternate costume for the Pokémon Trainer, although he remains the default choice.
The Pokémon Trainer is the only Pokémon fighter who is not a Pokémon.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, while Pokémon Trainer is a selectable character, he is not an actual fighter, instead commanding either Squirtle, Ivysaur, or Charizard within the background of the stage. The only move actually used by Pokémon Trainer is Pokémon Change, in which he switches out one of his three Pokémon at will, so Pokémon Change is the down special of both the Pokémon Trainer and his Pokémon alike. He also automatically switches Pokémon whenever one is KO'd. The Pokémon also run on a stamina system that weakens them, as their stamina decreases the longer they are out on the field. Their Final Smash is Triple Finish, in which Pokémon Trainer sends out all three Pokémon to attack at once. In English, the Pokémon Trainer is voiced by Michele Knotz.
Pokémon Trainer is one of the few fighters to have five alternate costumes in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, instead of the usual six, which is also the case for Lucario, Jigglypuff, and Sonic. One of Pokémon Trainer's alternative costumes has the same colors as another Pokémon Trainer: Brendan's outfit from Pokémon Emerald Version.
Pokémon Trainer's name is announced differently between the English and Japanese versions of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, just like with Fox McCloud in the original Super Smash Bros..
Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary
In Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary, Lucas runs into the Pokémon Trainer shortly after Ness is captured by Wario. The Pokémon Trainer sends out Squirtle, his only Pokémon at first, and they fight off the Subspace Army together. Lucas helps Pokémon Trainer find his Charizard and Ivysaur along the way.
On their journey, Pokémon Trainer and Lucas encounter a large Subspace Army robot named Galleom. Lucas and Pokémon Trainer manage to take down Galleom, although they are nearly caught in the resulting explosion, which knocks the Pokémon Trainer unconscious. Meta Knight saves both of them from their fall at the last moment. After safe on ground, Lucas and the Pokémon Trainer shake hands and continue their adventure.
Some time after being saved, Pokémon Trainer and Lucas team up with Meta Knight, Marth, and Ike. When encountering a huge Subspace Army group on the foothills of a mountain (Meta Knight has left to retake the Halberd), they are saved by Mario and his team (Link, Yoshi, Pit, and Kirby).
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, transforming during battle is omitted, so Charizard was made into a separate character, while the Pokémon Trainer, Squirtle, and Ivysaur are no longer playable. However, all of them each have their own obtainable trophy. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the Pokémon Trainer trophy is obtained by clearing the Pokémon Battle event.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Pokémon Trainer returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. With the removal of the stamina system, one can play as Squirtle, Ivysaur, or Charizard for an extended period of time with no penalty. Pokémon Trainer's added female variant is akin to Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Robin, Corrin, and Inkling, all of whom can be played as either a male or a female.
In English, Billy Bob Thompson (who also voices Greninja) voices the male Pokémon Trainer, while Kate Bristol voices the female. In Japanese, Tomoe Hanba voices the male trainer and Wakana Minami (previously known by her stage name, Wakana Kingyo) voices the female trainer. A majority of the male Pokémon Trainer's quotes are also different from Super Smash Bros. Brawl as well.
In Classic Mode, Pokémon Trainer's opponents exclusively consist of Pokémon except for Master Hand at the end, although he is accompanied by Mewtwo.
